MENSPODIUM MARIBOR 2010650 Minnaar Wins Maribor: Full results and race report

SOUTH AFRICAN STORM AS THE MONSTERS SLIP UP.
Hanging dust was the least of riders worries here in Maribor as the World Cup series opened with challenging but utterly perfect competition riding conditions. Rain skulked around for much of the weekend but by this morning there was little doubt that it was a full mud tyre event bring with it unpredictability and a real race.

Greg Minnaar had never performed particularly brilliantly here in the past, fifth in 08, 3rd in 09 and as the semi’s came to a close it seemed that the Specialized team of Hill and Fairclough had a fair old hold on the game with the Syndicate rider nearly three down.
British star Joe Smith hogged the hot seat for some time before Gwinn and then Frenchman Fabien Pedemanuad relieved him of it. An incredible eighth place for Smith. The Scott rider was in no hurry to leave but it was Gee Atherton who finally took the top position with a commanding 3.23 run, nearly two seconds faster than his semi. Greg then beat that by a couple hundredths and in comparison to his semi was only four hundredths quicker. It was all left to the Monster boys to shut the day down.

In front of the wide screen Brendan was down on the split but not only that he made a right meal of an entry into an off camber root section almost coming to a standstill. Game over? Not quite. Brendan must have had a complete storm of the lower slopes and slipped straight into a podium place. Third was nuts in the circumstances. But a race that Brendan should have won hands down. One day.

Team-mate Hill was up on the first clock check, what else? Everyone was expecting another damaging Hill performance but the reality was a mess-up on a rain gully which sent him flying off line and almost off the podium. Fifth. He was not exactly over the moon.

Of those expecting big things, no podium for Bryceland or Steve Smith, but the Canadian came mighty close on this occasion.
An incredible day for Britain, after twenty two qualified out of eighty and then 8 out of top twenty from UK. Good work Atherton, Fairclough, Smith, Simmonds, Bryceland, Cathro, Beaumont and Hart!
For Greg it was immense. It now puts him level pegging with Hill on twelve wins each. To beat Hill on a track which the Specialized rider was a huge and very popular achievement. New bike, new season, the circus moves to the Fort where the South African has good form. Looks set to be another blaster.
Steve Jones.

Rachel Atherton beats Sabrina Jonnier by ten seconds in the mud at Maribor.

Fastest qualifier Nicole Myriam lost her rear mech while on a good time.

Rachel Atherton almost failed to qualify for this race. A massive slam over the finish line double in qualifying further damaging her already fragile right hand (broken finger in a training accident) almost put a stop to the weekends proceedings. However, come final day Rachel put in a “Chausson style” winning margin of ten seconds over a visibly upset Sabrina Jonnier.

This was a major win for Atherton, after a long time waiting to get back to her winning ways. Sabrina looked strong in second but was unreservedly thumped by the young Commencal rider. Fastest qualifier and flat pedal rider Myriam Nicole bashed off her rear mech in or around the rock garden kept her podium position but Tracey Moseley only made it home with a spot of bus money, infact I don’t think you do get any money for 8th. Pugin was almost last through the speed trap ruining chances of a silver and settling for bronze. Pertra Bernhard filled out the remaining podium spot in 5th.
Junior Manon Carpenter had a great run in her first ever World Cup taking 14th and gaining valuable WC experience along the way.

All eyes are now on Fort William for round two where the power of Jonnier and Moseley will be hard to beat.

Maribor course

Best downhill course in UCI world cup. Riders love Maribor: very fast first part, crazy tehnical midle section (lots of rocks and roots) and finish part with an enormous crowd of spectators.

The course is located in a ski resort on the mountain Pohorje in the suburbs of Maribor, Slovenia's second largest city with a population of 150,000. The same venue is used for the classic women's Alpine Ski World Cup slalom and giant slalom events. The finish area is only 6km (10 minute drive) from downtown Maribor.

Maribor, the second most important centre and the second largest city of Slovenia. It has about 114000 inhabitants who live embraced in its wine growing hills and Mariborsko Pohorje. Located near Slovenian border with Austria, beside the Drava river and at the centre of five natural geographic regions.
